The Legend of the Thermal Spring of Harkány

If you approach from the south,
you can see the mountain with the rugged peak,
with deep furrows carved into the rocky surface,
and the footprints of a rooster, a goat, and a cat
are visible along the ridge of the mountain.
An old woman lived here with her daughter,
Harka, who had no equal for miles around.
The devil had set his eyes on her,
wandering here at night,
his words never failing him.
Whoever dared to challenge him
was taken by the crowing of a rooster
…to the peak of the hill.
The devil declared, “I shall have her,”
and took a cat, a goat,
and a rooster in his golden hand.
The woman waited in the attic,
watching the hooves of the horse.
With wide eyes, she followed the devil’s movements
as he descended the mountain to his doom.
Had she only hesitated a moment longer,
he would have reached the top.
“Run, woman, run for your life!”
Just as the devil was about to succeed,
the rooster let out a loud crow,
echoing across the hills.
The devil screamed in fury,
