Harkány Thermal and Beach Bath
The treasure of the town of Harkány lies in its medicinal water, which was already known during the Turkish occupation. By 1823, the Batthyány family owned significant land in the area and attempted to expand their pastures by draining a marshy land located on the site of today’s thermal bath. One of the day laborers – János Pogány – was very dissatisfied with the canal construction due to his rheumatic pain, which this task only worsened. That is why he was very surprised when, after the exhausting physical work in the swamp, all his pain disappeared.
The miraculous event soon became known, and more and more people visited the sulfurous water canal to treat their ailments. Finally, in 1825, construction of a bath began, and the next major step occurred in 1866: under the guidance of Vilmos Zsigmondy, an expert in artesian well drilling, new wells were drilled in the area. This was possible even with the technology of the time because along the Harkány-Siklós-Kistapolca fault line, high-temperature thermal water is unusually close to the surface.
But why can Harkány water be so effective? The answer lies in the composition of the water, which has a high carbonyl sulfide content. This substance is absorbed through the skin very easily and quickly and also, when inhaled as hydrogen sulfide, exerts a cartilage-strengthening and anti-inflammatory effect. Today at Harkány Thermal Bath, not only the spontaneous effect of the medicinal water is present, but the town also strives to utilize its natural conditions. The favorable climate, the microclimate of the thermal bath, and the 2,100–2,200 hours of sunshine per year are excellent complements to a carefully planned spa treatment.
In summer, alongside the thermal bath, the beach also provides excellent opportunities for visitors to relax, featuring one of Central Europe’s largest flat water pools, a seven-slide water park opened in 2016, children’s and sports pools, numerous recreational facilities, playgrounds, and a beautiful, spacious, leafy old park. The Harka Water World, opened in 2021, offers indoor experiences during bad weather and outdoor fun when the weather is good.

The renovated in 2024 thermal bath features outdoor pools with restored surfaces and shades, including one fully covered, one semi-covered, and one open medicinal pool, totaling 2,098 m² of water surface, 110–153 cm depth, and 34–38 °C temperature, providing healing for our guests (the water rises from 50–70 meters depth at an average temperature of 62 °C). Significant results can be achieved in the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal and joint diseases, osteoporosis, chronic gynecological inflammations, and lymph circulation disorders, as the water contains over 1,000 mg of minerals per liter. Harkány medicinal water is also proven to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis. Interestingly, outside of our town, there are only two other places in the world where this disease can be treated effectively. As mentioned earlier, the main component of the medicinal water is carbonyl sulfide, which is absorbed 150 times more efficiently than other sulfur compounds (e.g., sulfates). The sulfur absorbed plays an important role in replenishing sulfur-containing compounds in cartilage and is proven to integrate into the body. Previous studies have shown that Harkány medicinal water also has a beneficial effect on women with chronic gynecological inflammations, as 30% of the treated sterile women became pregnant. You can learn more about the water composition and other details on the Harkány Thermal and Beach Bath website. With our gallery, you can visually explore what the location offers.

The Butterfly Pool at Harkány Beach and Thermal Spa – with a surface area of 1460 m2 and 1520 m2 – is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Central Europe, with water temperatures of 26–28°C on the left side and 30–32°C on the right, featuring a gradually deepening design. Thanks to this design, even the smallest children can bathe together with the family, so there is no strict need to retreat to the kids’ pool if someone cannot swim. The sitting areas along the edges and the shallow steps at the entrances provide almost countless resting spots. Those looking for more active fun can enjoy the central parts of the pools. In summer, the beach hosts nighttime swimming with music, naturally at the Butterfly Pool. On these occasions, the best DJs and today’s star performers provide the soundtrack – well, they would, because beneath our feet there’s only water! Fun for kids, youth, and adults alike, usually free with the daily ticket! 🙂

On sunny days, the little ones are welcomed by the renovated outdoor children’s pool with water play elements, with a water temperature of 30–35°C and a surface area of 220 m2. The gradually deepening pool’s big favorite is the rainbow slide, where the youngest can show their bravery, and once they manage to slide down, it can be quite a challenge to get them out. 🙂 Parents are only allowed to accompany and support the children in this pool – swimming is not permitted. Sunbeds can also be rented directly beside the pool, making a little afternoon nap possible after enjoying an ice cream, American hot dog, or mini donut.
