Harkány Thermal Spa and Open-Air Bath

Harkány Thermal and Beach Bath

The treasure of the town of Harkány lies in its medicinal water, which was already known during the Turkish occupation. By 1823, the Batthyány family owned significant land in the area and attempted to expand their pastures by draining a marshy land located on the site of today’s thermal bath. One of the day laborers – János Pogány – was very dissatisfied with the canal construction due to his rheumatic pain, which this task only worsened. That is why he was very surprised when, after the exhausting physical work in the swamp, all his pain disappeared.

The miraculous event soon became known, and more and more people visited the sulfurous water canal to treat their ailments. Finally, in 1825, construction of a bath began, and the next major step occurred in 1866: under the guidance of Vilmos Zsigmondy, an expert in artesian well drilling, new wells were drilled in the area. This was possible even with the technology of the time because along the Harkány-Siklós-Kistapolca fault line, high-temperature thermal water is unusually close to the surface.

But why can Harkány water be so effective? The answer lies in the composition of the water, which has a high carbonyl sulfide content. This substance is absorbed through the skin very easily and quickly and also, when inhaled as hydrogen sulfide, exerts a cartilage-strengthening and anti-inflammatory effect. Today at Harkány Thermal Bath, not only the spontaneous effect of the medicinal water is present, but the town also strives to utilize its natural conditions. The favorable climate, the microclimate of the thermal bath, and the 2,100–2,200 hours of sunshine per year are excellent complements to a carefully planned spa treatment.

In summer, alongside the thermal bath, the beach also provides excellent opportunities for visitors to relax, featuring one of Central Europe’s largest flat water pools, a seven-slide water park opened in 2016, children’s and sports pools, numerous recreational facilities, playgrounds, and a beautiful, spacious, leafy old park. The Harka Water World, opened in 2021, offers indoor experiences during bad weather and outdoor fun when the weather is good.

The renovated in 2024 thermal bath features outdoor pools with restored surfaces and shades, including one fully covered, one semi-covered, and one open medicinal pool, totaling 2,098 m² of water surface, 110–153 cm depth, and 34–38 °C temperature, providing healing for our guests (the water rises from 50–70 meters depth at an average temperature of 62 °C). Significant results can be achieved in the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal and joint diseases, osteoporosis, chronic gynecological inflammations, and lymph circulation disorders, as the water contains over 1,000 mg of minerals per liter. Harkány medicinal water is also proven to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis.

Interestingly, outside of our town, there are only two other places in the world where this disease can be treated effectively.

As mentioned earlier, the main component of the medicinal water is carbonyl sulfide, which is absorbed 150 times more efficiently than other sulfur compounds (e.g., sulfates). The sulfur absorbed plays an important role in replenishing sulfur-containing compounds in cartilage and is proven to integrate into the body. Previous studies have shown that Harkány medicinal water also has a beneficial effect on women with chronic gynecological inflammations, as 30% of the treated sterile women became pregnant. You can learn more about the water composition and other details on the Harkány Thermal and Beach Bath website. With our gallery, you can visually explore what the location offers.

Thanks to the section opened in 2021, the spa offers experiences even in bad weather, and for sauna lovers, there is a complete Sauna World. The new wing of European standard provides all-day entertainment for ages 0 to 99. Nowadays, the spa regularly hosts night swimming events with DJs providing music, cocktails are available at the bar to quench your thirst, or if you prefer, you can retreat to the sauna at 9 p.m. and release your tired steam. What does Harka Vízivilág offer?

  • Water depth: 95 cm – 1.2 m
  • Water temperature: 30 – 32 °C
  • 766 m2 water surface
  • 3 slides, two fully enclosed, going outside the building and returning – in winter, this is a really interesting experience, beyond just sliding. The third is designed for families or friends, where multiple people can scream on the way to the water. The only “victims” are the swimmers in the pool, who will surely need to wipe their faces after a daring slide. 🙂
  • Adventure pool, which you reach after the slides. It also has a diving tower, which is not recommended to jump off belly first. 🙂 The climbing wall is great for ever-active children or young people, or for those wanting a challenge. The current channel is an artificially flowing water tunnel, as if swimming in a river. In the middle, a jacuzzi provides a retreat for those giving up the struggle. 🙂
  • Experience pool with water massage elements including neck showers, reclining and seated underwater massage benches. Very useful for parents who want to watch their kids while enjoying their own relaxation.
  • Outdoor open beach and swimming pool, which, in favorable weather, usually from late spring to early summer, complements the beach and indoor adventure center. This section offers spacious outdoor pools divided into two areas with several swimming lanes and built-in seating and lounge areas.

Harkány Beach Spa

The spa provides pleasant, high-quality areas for family sunbathing, play, sports, and dining. Every member of the family can find the most enjoyable activity for themselves. The Butterfly Pool at Harkány Beach and Thermal Spa – with a surface area of 1460 m2 and 1520 m2 – is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Central Europe, with water temperatures of 26–28°C on the left side and 30–32°C on the right, featuring a gradually deepening design.

Thanks to this design, even the smallest children can bathe together with the family, so there is no strict need to retreat to the kids’ pool if someone cannot swim. The sitting areas along the edges and the shallow steps at the entrances provide almost countless resting spots. Those looking for more active fun can enjoy the central parts of the pools.

In summer, the beach hosts nighttime swimming with music, naturally at the Butterfly Pool. On these occasions, the best DJs and today’s star performers provide the soundtrack – well, they would, because beneath our feet there’s only water! Fun for kids, youth, and adults alike, usually free with the daily ticket! 🙂

❗+1 extra for 2024: The newest slide park next to the Butterfly Pool has OPENED, now offering a total of 12 slides for visitors ❗

On sunny days, the little ones are welcomed by the renovated outdoor children’s pool with water play elements, with a water temperature of 30–35°C and a surface area of 220 m2. The gradually deepening pool’s big favorite is the rainbow slide, where the youngest can show their bravery, and once they manage to slide down, it can be quite a challenge to get them out. 🙂 Parents are only allowed to accompany and support the children in this pool – swimming is not permitted. Sunbeds can also be rented directly beside the pool, making a little afternoon nap possible after enjoying an ice cream, American hot dog, or mini donut.

Slide Park

On May 1, 2016, Harkány opened a completely new modern slide park with 7 slides, free and unlimited to use with a bath ticket. On the Xavin website, we aim to show the experience each slide offers…

  • Family: similar to the indoor Harka Water World red (family) slide, located on the lowest level. Advantage: up to 4–5 people can slide side by side, so older kids can share the experience with the whole family!
  • Snake: on the second level for braver visitors. Perfect for timed slides on the enclosed green slide. The exit curve guarantees a giant splash—who will be faster?
  • Turbolance: also on the second level, can be slid with one or two-person mats. Kids can sit with parents; two adults can slide together—guaranteed speed and excitement!
  • Kamikaze: third floor, for the truly brave and minimum 120 cm shoulder height. Steep and thrilling, but safe!
  • UFO: minimum shoulder height required. Suitable for advanced sliders seeking the best strategy to navigate its length, curves, and steepness.
  • Half-closed/half-open slide: one or two-person mats, adult accompaniment allowed if below minimum height. Features multiple curves and slopes.
  • Onion Slide: multiple slides in one; riders can circle 2–3 times before reaching the pool. Minimum shoulder height required.
